I am one of many Canadians who expect my government to live up to its commitments regarding the protection and sustainable management of our oceans. Canada has committed to do so both in international treaties and in national law.
I expect Canada not just to meet its basic obligations, but also to be a leader in international efforts to protect the worlds’ oceans. However, Canada has not yet met even its minimum commitments. The resources to do so are needed now.
I urge your government to immediately allocate an additional $100 million per year for 5 years to allow Fisheries and Oceans Canada and related departments to fulfil their commitments to research, design and implement ecosystem-based plans and protected areas for Canada’s oceans and coastal areas.
