Sir Nicholas Stern and Dr David Suzuki release joint statement

February 19, 2007 - TORONTO - The scientific evidence is now overwhelming; climate change is a serious global threat and it demands an urgent global response.

The Stern Review has been called the world's most in-depth analysis of the economic costs and opportunities of climate change. The 700-page report concludes that early action to reduce the impacts of GHG emissions could cost 1% of GDP, but it warns that the costs of delaying action will result in significantly higher economic costs. The world does not need to choose between averting climate change and promoting growth and development," said Sir Nicholas.

"Changes in energy technologies and in the structure of economies have created opportunities to decouple growth from greenhouse gas emissions. Indeed, ignoring climate change will eventually damage economic growth."

Dr Suzuki is mid-way through a national tour, talking to Canadians about their concerns for the environment and the future of the environment. He has been told that Canadians want strong decisive leadership on global warming, and that people recognize that solving the issue is a long-term issue that requires action now.

"Real leadership is political courage," says Dr Suzuki. "Canadians want and deserve action now, not more promises."

Sir Nicholas and Dr Suzuki will be available at the media briefing to discuss the Stern Review and aspects of domestic climate change.
