If I were Prime Minister I’d start by replacing all public transportation vehicles with electric ones, as many countries have done before us.
AMÈLIE, MONTRÉAL, QUÉBEC I will be eligible to vote for the next election for the first time – I will be looking for a government that encourages the use of public transportation, rather than one that discourages it! De plus, je subventionnerais le transport public afin de mieux servir la population qui l’utiliserait un prix minime faute de quoi elle serait penalisee par la loi pour pour usage de voiture personnelle dans un rayon donnè de la maison au travail (comme Londres). I would pour money into our cities for public transportation upgrades, bike lanes, trains, anything that can take a large number of cars off our roads. I would make it inviting and economical for people to take inner city public transit or other alternative transportation. This could be done by lowering transit fares and making our city sidewalks and pathways more enjoyable. I would create an infrastructure that would allow every Canadian to either take public transportation to and from work or create affordable housing within walking distance of people’s employment, particularly in urban and suburban areas. I would fund public transportation in cities, towns and rural areas to make it possible for most people to use it most of the time. Being able to get from place to place at an affordable price should be a right for everyone, and we don’t have to destroy the environment while doing it (which is what we’re doing when so many people drive their own cars). I would look at city infrastructures and create better public transportation service. I would introdue infrastructure incentives for mass transit and the intercity use of rail travel. I would impose carbon taxes on the airline industry to encourage more efficient aircraft and alternatives to air travel. All major cities will be required to have extensive city-wide mass transit systems that utilize both rail and bus. Air travel will be replaced in some areas by frequently run, effective, people-friendly, and energy-efficient high-speed rail. Extensive mass transit systems that are fast, effective and energy efficient will be attractive to citizens and substantially reduce greenhouse emissions and air pollution. I would also start promoting alternative methods of transportation in the suburbs and make it mandatory that all universities include bus passes in their fees. I would provide money to small rural communities to assist them in developing transit systems around counties and municipalities. I would encourage public transportation by developing it to a much greater extend. We should follow the exemple of the European countries. I would create a Ministry of Public Transportation devoted to subsidizing and reviving rail and bus travel within and between centres of population in Canada. I would promote incentives to use the public system (and dis-incentives to rely on private cars). I would apply a heavy environment tax to gasoline sold for private use. I would increase funding for and expand public transportation. Easy access to comfortable and reliable public transit will help keep people out of their cars! I would immediately transfer funding to the metropolitan areas to upgrade and extend public transit to the suburbs in an effort to reduce auto emmissions. I personally live 57 kms from my work – there is no public transportation option for me. Develop a transportation strategy (from the local to national levels)that makes environmentally friendly methods of transport a viable option for most Canadians (i.e., walking, bicycling, public transit such as buses and trains) and helps wean people off their addiction to the car. I would ensure that all of our communities are built around sustainable transportation options – walking, cycling, and public transit. I’d work with our country’s cities to introduce legislation that prohibits the use of private vehicles in our downtown cores. Downtowns should only be accessible through public transportation systems predominated by electrically powered vehicles such as light rail transits and tramlines. ... I would also develop and fund public transportation to give incentives for people to stop using their cars. This means building cycling trails in cities, taxing cars at city entrances (especially drivers with no passengers), and reducing car access in downtown areas. I would also offer a federal tax rebate to people who buy and use fuel efficient hybrid cars and who use public transportation frequently. |
