This action alert is now closed. Thank you for taking action and being one of more than 5000 people who asked their provincial energy ministers to stand up for a clean energy future at the Energy and Mines Ministers' Conference in Kananaskis in July.
Those efforts helped build provincial support for a cleaner energy strategy for Canada.
Your letters encouraged Ontario and Quebec's energy ministers to support a cleaner energy vision rather than the one outlined in conference documents, which revealed a disconnect with the climate change target set by the federal government. The proposed strategy would not reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and would lead to rapid oil sands expansion. It would not allow Canada to meet the emissions target set by the federal government or the target scientists say is necessary to limit global warming to safe levels of 2°C or less.
Canada needs to shift to an energy system that is truly sustainable and leads to a better quality of life. This system would provide cleaner air, address climate change, respect the territories of First Nations people, provide us with enough energy to meet our needs, and make us a leader in developing clean technology.
The David Suzuki Foundation is committed to creating a conversation with Canadians to explore these important issues and put Canada on the path to a cleaner future. We have embarked on an energy research project that will evaluate the options for a low-carbon energy future in Canada and get Canadians talking about what a sustainable energy system means to them.
We thank you for your support and look forward to pursuing a clean energy future together. Stay tuned this fall for next steps on our sustainable energy project and opportunities to get involved.
